6 Marble Maintenance Tips

Dirt can diminish the beauty of our marble flooring. The dullness of marble makes the veining network look filthy.

Maintaining marble flooring is a continuous task that can help us sustain our sense of royalty with marble flooring. Six simple maintenance tips are given below:

1. Use Rugs in High-Traffic Areas

We should use rugs or small mats in high-traffic areas. Also, put foot mats on the entrance to wipe off the shoes. It will help reduce scuff marks and dirt entering our home.

Rugs might slip on the polished marble flooring, so make sure to use non-skid rugs for safety.

Clean the carpets once a week to keep them tidy. To clean the mats, take them outside and shake them. We can also use vacuum cleaners on the rugs but don’t slide the vacuum cleaner on the marble flooring as it will cause etch marks.

Mats will help keep the dirt to its minimum level, keeping the appearance of marble flooring up to par.

2. Choose The Right Cleaner

Marble is unlike any other material; it needs proper care to maintain its polished look.

This natural marble is sensitive to acids. We cannot use any floor cleaners with an acidic solution. Using acidic and harsh cleansers can cause etches or dull spots.

Avoid cleaners with orange, lemon, or vinegar elements. Read the description of the cleaners before buying.

Only buy cleaners that are specifically designed for marble cleaning. Harsh cleansers can ruin the polishing of the floor.

It is preferred to use a neutral pH cleaner. Read the label for details and instructions. Try a new cleaner on a small inconspicuous area to know that it suits the marble flooring.

You can make a homemade solution by mixing a mild dishwashing liquid with water to remove any spots on the floor.

3. Be Careful What You Put on the Floor

Be mindful of what you put on the floor or what spills on the floor. Marble is susceptible to acidic liquids. Lemon juice or other caustic materials can cause abrasion and damage the surface.

Be careful while handling such substances. Specially kitchen floors need extra vigilance. Wine or coffee stains need to be removed rapidly. A little mindfulness can maintain the kitchen flooring just fine.

In the bathroom, shampoo or body wash can cause discoloration of marble tile flooring. Quickly wash it off and dry the floor when done showering with the help of a soft wiper followed by a dry cloth.

Additionally, always use an exhaust fan to not build extra moisture inside the bathroom. Marble flooring demands extra care but also provides next-level beauty to your place.

4. Regularly Seal the Floor

When we first install the marble floor, we get it sealed by professionals. As marble is a porous stone, sealing is essential for its long life.

Sealing is a surface treatment that clogs any pores on the marble surface. It will prevent any liquid absorption and hence prevents staining. This protective barrier fades away with time because of harsh detergents and many other reasons.

We need to reseal the marble flooring once a year regularly. It will bring back that protective layer that stops the absorption of materials into the stone. Frequent sealing will keep the marble free of stains and scratches. Our marble flooring will look new even after years of usage.

On the other hand, some marbles do not need sealing. Check with the manufacturer or service provider if your marble needs filling. If it does not require sealing, it will cause discoloration, in case you still put sealing on.

5. Remove Dirt from Marble Floors

Marble is a delicate stone prone to etching, staining, and scratching. Marble flooring tends to get dirty with usage. To remove dirt from the floor, we must dust and mop them regularly. Depending upon the number of people living in the house determines the frequency of cleaning.

If one or two people live, cleaning the floor once a week is acceptable. With more people living, cleaning should be more frequent.

To clean the floor, we must use a soft bristles dust mop. The stiff bristles might cause scratches on the surface. Don’t use any harsh chemicals because that can damage the finishing. We can also use a damp mop to remove any grime after dusting the floor. Change the water frequently, so we don’t bring dirty water back on the floor. The mop should not be too wet, just damp.

6. Deep Clean Marble Once a Month

It is fruitful to deep clean the marble flooring once a month. Remove any stains by using a pH-neutral cleaner. Spray the cleaner and rub the stain with a soft cloth. We can also use water spray to remove the stains.

Marble tiles flooring can accumulate grout around the tiles. Use a soft toothbrush and marble cleaner to remove the grout. Make a to-and-fro motion with the toothbrush on the grout line, and ensure not to use the brush on the marble surface.

The scrubbing can remove all the dirt accumulated on the sides of the tiles. After a deep clean, the marble floor will look shiny and spotless. We can also polish the marble floor by using a marble polishing powder with a microfiber cloth.

Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts

Some cleaning dos and don’ts are mentioned for better cleaning our marble flooring.

Wash the floor

We can wash the floor using hot water and a soft cloth. Hot water does a superior job of removing stains than cold water. An even better option is distilled water. We can add a mild detergent in water to remove tough stains. Once the washing is done, dry the floor with a soft cloth.

Felt pads remove scuff marks

Furniture dragging or sneakers can leave scuff marks. They can be very frustrating as they diminish the beauty of the marble floor. Most scuff marks should go away with moping, dusting, or washing. If some hard scuff marks are present, we can use a felt pad to scrub them off.

Use mild detergents

Avoid using acidic or harsh chemical detergents on marble flooring. Gentle detergents with neutral pH are preferable. Specially designed marble cleaners are also available.

Clean spills as soon as possible

Spills happen all the time in homes, especially with kids. Blot up a splash with a towel. Work our way from the edges to the center so we don’t spread the liquid. Use a damp cloth or mild detergent to remove stains.

Never air-dry the floor

Air-drying the marble floor after a wet cloth wash is a terrible idea. Always use a dry cloth to dry the surface. If we allow the marble flooring to air dry, it will absorb water and cleanser, which will cause discoloration.

Use baking soda with caution

Baking soda is an alkaline, mildly abrasive cleaner that cleans harsh stains and grout. Be very careful with baking soda; gently rub the floor, and keep it on the surface for a short time. It is better to repeat the process than prolonged exposure because it can dull the marble’s shine.

Avoid a vacuum cleaner

It is better not to use a vacuum cleaner on the marble surface. But if we have to, be cautious. First, the vacuum wheel can scratch the floor so use the rubberized wheel for a smooth ride. Second, don’t use stiff brushes and pressure while cleaning because they can damage the marble finish.

Marble flooring is easy to maintain and clean. It needs regular and consistent habits to take care of marble flooring. If we succeed in those actions, marble can remain brand new for extended periods.
